REQUIRED for consideration
Current membership in national MOAA and Surviving Spouse Virtual Chapter
Surviving spouse of a commissioned officer in the uniformed services or a current surviving spouse liaison for a MOAA council or chapter
Ability to participate in person at MOAA’s annual Advocacy in Action event in Washington, D.C., which may require walking and standing for extended periods of time
Demonstrated commitment to MOAA’s issues for servicemembers, families, veterans and survivors
Willingness to serve as a board member of the Surviving Spouse Virtual Chapter
ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA:
Leadership ability, with the talent to work independently and as part of a team
Lead and manage a project from beginning to end
Generate ideas
Assume responsibility
Adhere to deadlines
Demonstrate excellent people and networking skills
Visit legislative offices on Capitol Hill and locally to educate members of Congress and their staffs on issues affecting the uniformed services community
Excellent communication skills
Establish/maintain contact, primarily via email, with both council and chapter presidents and liaisons within an assigned SSAC region
Maintain awareness of legislative issues impacting surviving spouses
Ability to share knowledge
Comfortable speaking in front of large and small audiences
Some computer and online proficiency, to include:
Basic email usage
Microsoft Word and Excel
Social media: Facebook, Instagram, etc.
Willing to commit time to SSAC:
Available to travel one to two times per year for 3-5 days at a time
Participate in conference calls
Complete training to be a facilitator for Surviving Spouse Liaison Training
Assume a four-year term on the committee starting October 2026, with the option to extend for two years
Participate in conference calls
Lead Surviving Spouse Training Sessions during Regional Leadership Training sessions both in person and virtually.
Participate in committee to work on SSAC business as needed
New SSAC member will be mentored by a senior member with the expectation that the new member will do the same during the committee term
